India has officially implemented its long awaited labour reforms, bringing four consolidated Labour Codes into force after replacing 29 fragmented central laws. Notified by the Ministry of Labour & Employment, the new framework aims to simplify compliance, expand social security, and modernise workplace standards for a rapidly evolving workforce.
The Codes, the Code on Wages (2019), Industrial Relations Code (2020), Social Security Code (2020) and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSH) Code (2020) introduce several structural shifts. These include a uniform definition of wages, broader coverage for contract and gig workers, universal minimum-wage protection, tighter strike protocols, and expanded safety and health provisions across sectors.
Employers will see streamlined compliance and greater hiring flexibility, while employees gain stronger social-security benefits though in-hand salaries may adjust due to higher PF and gratuity bases. With India’s labour landscape undergoing its most significant reform in decades, organisations will need to re-align their HR, payroll, EHS, and workforce-management systems to remain compliant.
